David Sweat still Remains on Run

After massive three-week manhunt, escaped prisoner Richard Matt was shot dead by US Border Patrol agents Friday afternoon while efforts to find David Sweat are still on.

Matt and Sweat escaped from the facility in Dannemora on June 6 and police have pledged to continue a massive manhunt to find Sweat.

Although the duo appeared to stick together on their flight from the law authorities, police are hopeful they could find Sweat after encountering Matt.

The development to find Matt started Friday after a man noticed gunfire that hit his camper as he was towing it through Malone. He called police, who investigated near where the man said the camper was hit.

Police smelled gunpowder when police approached a nearby cabin. They followed evidence out the back of the cabin. Matt was verbally challenged by Border Patrol agents. However, he refused to surrender, and was finally shot dead.

New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico said that they recovered a .20-gauge shotgun from Matt's body after killing him. That gun matches the description missing since Saturday from a Franklin County cabin.

Police continued to look for Sweat using infrared vision devices to peer through the night on all-terrain vehicles and in helicopters.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, "You never want to see anyone lose their life. But I would remind people that Mr. Matt was an escaped murderer from a state prison. Mr. Matt killed two people who we know about".
