John McCain Exhorts Donald Trump to Apologize to Veterans and their Families

The real-estate baron Donald Trump has landed in the soup! This is owing to his controversial comments referring to Sen. John McCain as being a war hero, only because he was 'captured'.

Trump's remarks were not even well received by McCain himself. In an interview with MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' this Monday, McCain came down heavily on Trump when he said that Trump need not apologize to him, but should instead apologize to the veterans captured in war and their families.

McCain said that Trump's words surely would have hurt families of people who either had been held captive or had given up their lives while at war. He added, "So many men and some women who served and sacrificed and happened to be held prisoner and somehow to denigrate that in any way their service I think is offensive to most of our veterans".

McCain himself spent some five and a half years as a prisoner of war in the 'Hanoi Hilton'in Vietnam, where he was tortured constantly. However, Trump jibed at him saying that he was only a war hero 'because he was captured'. These caustic comments infuriated Republicans who strongly condemned Trump's remarks as being 'offensive'. Some even contended that Trump should be dropped out of the race as a presidential candidate.

However, Trump doesn't think that he owes McCain an apology for his comments. He, instead, accused the media of distorting facts, through a piece in Sunday's op-ed in USA Today.
