Brooklyn teacher removed amid controversial relations with former student

Education authorities removed a Brooklyn gym teacher from the classroom after an Instagram photo showing a former student kissing him surfaced.

The photo posted on the social network shows John Ramirez of Origins High School in Sheepshead Bay with former student Tamara Stimphil, who graduated last year and played on a PSAL flag football team coached by Ramirez.

In the controversial photo, Stimphil can be seen gently caressing Ramirez's chin while giving him a kiss on the cheek. It went viral online, particularly among the school students, after it surfaced last week. The photo was recently taken off the social networking site.

Confirming the teacher's removal, Education Department spokesperson Devora Kaye said, "These are serious allegations, and we took swift action to remove Mr. Ramirez from the classroom."

However, the spokesperson didn't clear exactly which allegations was she referencing, as was the nature of the relationship between the teacher and the student.

School sources said the students thought it was quite strange that the teacher and the former student were always together. Last week, investigators interviewed a number of students.

Ramirez, who was bounced to the education department's "rubber room" in downtown Brooklyn on January 6, is listed on the school's website as dean of student support. He will continue to earn his regular salary until the case is finished. He earns $101,257 annually.
